The washcloth is the most used daily care accessory. It accompanies facial and body cleansing, from infant bathing to adult body scrubs. Well chosen, it offers softness, hygiene and durability at an affordable price.

This guide reviews the different types of gloves, the materials available, specific uses and good maintenance actions to make an informed choice.

Why use a washcloth?

The washcloth has several advantages over simple soaping by hand. It increases the effect of soap by creating a more generous foam, lightly exfoliates the skin by eliminating dead cells, and allows you to reach hard-to-reach areas.

Its practical format makes it particularly suitable for daily cleansing in the shower or bath. Its textured surface stimulates circulation and provides a much appreciated invigorating sensation upon waking up.

In terms of hygiene, the glove offers a notable advantage compared to shower flowers: it dries more quickly, which limits the proliferation of bacteria between two uses.

The different types of washcloths

The market today offers several categories of gloves, each meeting specific needs.

Cotton terry washcloth

The cotton terry glove remains the universal reference. Its absorbent, soft and resistant material is suitable for all skin types and all ages. The weight of the cotton determines its quality: a glove weighing 450 g/m² or more offers optimal absorption and a long lifespan.

It is the versatile option for daily cleansing. It is machine washable without difficulty and maintains its softness for years with regular maintenance.

Cotton gauze washcloth

The cotton gauze glove offers softness particularly appreciated for delicate skin. Its light, airy and naturally breathable material makes it an ideal choice for washing babies and children.

Thinner than a terry glove, it dries very quickly and remains pleasant to the touch even after numerous washes.

Exfoliating washcloth

The exfoliating glove has a more textured surface, made of linen, sisal or woven plant fibers. Its use is different: it is used once or twice a week for a gentle exfoliation that eliminates dead cells and reveals the radiance of the skin.

The linen exfoliating glove offers the advantage of a natural material and a controlled exfoliating effect. For an even gentler treatment, it can be combined with a homemade scrub made from sugar, honey and vegetable oil, using circular movements on the body.

Single-use washcloth

The single-use glove meets specific needs: travel, hospitalization, nursing homes, home care. Made from a polyester or viscose non-woven fabric, it can be thrown away after use, which simplifies hygiene in professional or medical contexts.

These gloves are sold in batches in pharmacies or specialized stores. They are particularly appreciated in the context of caring for the elderly or bedridden, as well as for business travel.

Baby washcloth: specific criteria

Infant skin is thinner and more fragile than that of an adult. The choice of glove must take this into account.

The most suitable materials are cotton gauze, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified organic cotton and fine cotton terry. These natural fabrics limit the risk of irritation and respect the delicate skin of the little ones.

For young parents who want to get started in sewing, making a baby glove with cotton gauze or cotton terry cloth is an accessible project. A few online tutorials explain how to make a simple glove from fabric scraps, ideal for a personalized birth gift.

Having several gloves in the baby's bathroom allows you to switch between toilets and washes with peace of mind. The soft colors and animal or floral patterns personalize the accessory according to each person's preferences.

Washcloth or shower flower: what's the difference?

The two accessories are used for washing but respond to different logics.

The washcloth wraps the hand for direct and precise contact with the skin. It allows you to target areas of the body with finesse, and its format makes it easier to maintain impeccable hygiene because it dries quickly and is easy to machine wash.

The shower flower, generally made of knotted synthetic mesh, produces more foam with less soap. It is suitable for people who like more exfoliation but retains more moisture, which can encourage bacterial growth if not replaced regularly.

For sensitive skin, acne-prone skin or infants, the washcloth is generally more suitable thanks to its ease of maintenance and its more controlled contact with the skin.

Which subject to favor?

Beyond the type of glove, the material itself determines comfort and lifespan.

  • Standard cotton: good value for money, absorbent and easy to care for
  • Certified organic cotton: respect for sensitive skin, ecological approach
  • Cotton gauze: fineness and softness, ideal for babies
  • Linen: natural exfoliating effect, noble and durable material
  • Microfiber: very absorbent and quick drying, especially for sports and travel
  • Polyester nonwoven: single use, medical and professional contexts

100% cotton remains the reference choice for daily use, particularly in its organic version which guarantees the absence of harmful substances. To find out more about this flagship household linen material, consult our complete guide to cotton percale and that of cotton gauze.

How to use a washcloth correctly?

Correct use of the glove maximizes its effectiveness and preserves skin health.

Wet the glove with lukewarm water then place a small amount of soap or shower gel on it. Rub the fabric between your hands to create a lather, then apply it to the body with gentle, circular movements. Focus on areas prone to perspiration (armpits, folds, feet) without attacking the skin.

Rinse the glove thoroughly after use to remove any soap residue, then air dry it, ideally spread out so that it dries quickly. Avoid leaving it in a damp ball, which would encourage bacterial proliferation.

One glove per person remains the basic rule for hygiene reasons, never to be shared with another member of the household.

Maintenance and hygiene

The maintenance of the washcloth follows a few simple rules which extend its lifespan and guarantee impeccable hygiene.

  • Machine wash at 60°C to kill bacteria, 40°C for routine care
  • Use a gentle detergent, without softener which reduces the absorption of cotton
  • Dry completely between uses to limit bacteria
  • Store in a dry and ventilated place
  • Wash baby gloves separately from other textiles, ideally with hypoallergenic detergent

To maintain the suppleness of cotton without using fabric softener, you can add a little white vinegar to the rinse cycle. This natural tip preserves fibers and neutralizes laundry residue.

When to change your washcloth?

A quality cotton washcloth, properly maintained, can last for several years. There are several signs that it needs to be replaced: fraying fabric, noticeable loss of softness, persistent stains or odors that don't wash away.

On average, we recommend renewing your glove every 3 to 6 months for daily use, or even more frequently for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Having several rotating gloves allows you to rotate between washes while preserving each piece.

Whether for daily care, washing the baby or a weekly scrub, the washcloth remains an essential bathroom accessory. Chosen in quality cotton and well maintained, it accompanies your skincare routines over the long term with gentleness and effectiveness.
