Comforter

Our selection : Duvet.

The duvet is the central element of the bed. Its filling, its weight and its size directly determine the comfort of the nights, summer and winter. Choosing it wisely ensures restful sleep for years to come.

This guide reviews the sizes available, the types of filling, the heat levels depending on the season and the quality criteria that make the difference in use.

What is a duvet?

The duvet is a large fabric envelope filled with insulating filling. Placed on the fitted sheet, it ensures thermal regulation of the body during the night. It replaces traditional blankets and offers immediate enveloping comfort.

Its filling can be natural (down, feather) or synthetic (polyester fibers), with varying weights depending on the desired level of warmth. The outer covering, generally made of cotton or percale, also plays a role in the breathability and lifespan of the product.

Duvet or duvet cover: do not confuse

Quilt refers to the filled blanket itself. The duvet cover is the decorative fabric envelope that slips around to protect it and dress the bed.

A duvet does not wash as easily as a cover. This is precisely the role of the latter: to protect the investment represented by the duvet, which can last more than ten years with good maintenance.

The duvet + duvet cover duo forms the basis of modern bed linen. It is completed by the fitted sheet, the pillowcases and sometimes a flat sheet for a complete set.

Choosing the Right Duvet Size

The size of the duvet must greatly exceed the width of the mattress to provide a comfortable fall on each side. Here are the usual correspondences.

Duvet 140x200 for single bed

The 140x200 cm duvet is dedicated to single beds 90 cm wide. It equips children's and teenagers' bedrooms and extra beds. For adults who sleep alone, you can also opt for a 200x200 for more coverage.

Duvet 200x200 for standard double bed

The 200x200 cm duvet is suitable for double beds 140 cm wide. It is one of the best-selling sizes in France, offering good coverage and a classic overhang. It is perfect for a couple who don't fight over the duvet at night.

220x240 duvet for 140 or 160 bed

The 220x240 cm duvet generously covers 140 cm beds or fits snugly onto 160 cm beds. This is the preferred size for couples who like to bundle up and have a marked drop on each side of the bed.

Duvet 240x260 for queen size bed

The 240x260 cm duvet corresponds to queen size beds 160 cm wide. It offers generous comfort for two and a real visual presence on the bed. It is also a format popular with couples who share a large duvet rather than two individual duvets.

Duvet 260x240 for king size bed

The 260x240 cm duvet fits king size beds of 180 cm and above. It ensures optimal coverage even on the widest beds, with a generous fall that perfectly covers the bed.

Which filling should you prefer?

The filling is the technical criterion which determines the thermal comfort, lightness and lifespan of the duvet. Two large families dominate the offer.

Natural filling (down and feather)

Duck or goose down offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio. Light, insulating and particularly inflating, it gently envelops the body. High-end down duvets are sometimes Origine France Garantie certified, which ensures complete traceability of the sector.

Feather, denser than down, provides weight and hold. It is often used mixed with down to obtain an attractive comfort-price compromise. Natural fillings require regular professional cleaning but can last fifteen to twenty years with good maintenance.

Synthetic filling (polyester fibers)

Polyester fibers, particularly silicone hollow fibers, reproduce the insulating properties of down at a more affordable price. They offer the major advantage of being machine washable, which considerably simplifies maintenance.

Modern fibers such as Aerelle Blue, from the recycling of plastic bottles, combine thermal performance and an ecological approach. It is also the ideal option for allergy sufferers, as synthetic fibers are naturally hypoallergenic and anti-mites.

How hot depending on the season?

The weight of the duvet, expressed in grams per square meter, determines its warmth level. Several categories coexist depending on the season.

Ultra light summer duvet

Ultra-light summer duvets have a weight of 100 to 200 g/m². They provide just the right amount of coverage for hot nights, without suffocating or making you sweat. This is the ideal option for sleepers who have difficulty handling heat at night.

Temperate duvet

The temperate duvet, around 250 to 350 g/m², is suitable for mid-season (spring and autumn). It's also a good choice for rooms that are well heated in winter or sleepers who naturally give off a lot of body heat.

Warm duvet for winter

Warm duvets have a weight of 400 to 500 g/m² or more. Designed for low temperatures, they envelop the body with intense comfort, particularly appreciated in poorly heated rooms or for people who are cold.

4 seasons duvet

The 4-season duvet combines two duvets that are assembled by snaps or ties: a light one for summer, a temperate one for spring and autumn, and the two together for winter. It's a versatile solution that avoids investing in several separate duvets.

Two innovations mark the current market and respond to specific needs.

The weighted duvet, heavier than a classic duvet (generally 5 to 9 kg), exerts light pressure on the body, compared to a hug. Some users report that it helps with falling asleep, especially in cases of stress or sleep disorders. The weight is chosen according to the size of the sleeper: approximately 10% of body weight.

The cooling duvet, designed for hot nights or sweaty sleepers, incorporates special fibers or treatments that actively dissipate heat. It is an interesting alternative to classic summer duvets for scorching periods.

The duvet cover: an underestimated criterion

The outer shell of the duvet deserves as much attention as its filling. A 100% cotton cover, ideally percale, guarantees good breathability, limits moisture accumulation and prevents the filling from migrating through the fabric.

Premium envelopes are often organically grown and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, which ensures the absence of harmful substances in the fabric. To find out more about this material, consult our complete guide to cotton percale.

This envelope will then be covered with a cotton percale duvet cover, which protects the duvet and sets the decorative tone for the bedroom.

How to maintain your duvet?

Maintenance depends on the filling. Synthetic duvets are generally machine washable at 40 or 60°C, provided you have a large enough drum (ideally 7 kg minimum for a 240x260 duvet). Tumble drying on low heat helps restore fluffiness to the fibers.

Down or feather duvets require more special care. Professional cleaning every two to three years is recommended. Between two cleanings, regular airing in the open air and shaking the feathers are enough to maintain fluffiness.

  • Air the duvet for a few minutes each morning to evacuate body moisture
  • Systematically protect it with a duvet cover to limit dirt.
  • Regularly check seams and areas of wear
  • Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight
  • Avoid prolonged folding which can compact the filling

A good, properly maintained duvet retains all its qualities for many years.

When to change your duvet?

The lifespan of a duvet varies depending on its filling and maintenance. A synthetic duvet is generally replaced every 3 to 5 years, when the fibers begin to settle and lose their insulating power.

A quality down comforter can last 10 to 15 years, or even longer with careful maintenance. The time to replace it can be recognized by several signs: notable loss of swelling, persistent stains, odors that no longer go away when cleaned, or the appearance of agglomerates inside.

Whatever model you choose, the investment in a quality duvet pays off over time. It is one of the elements of bed linen that has the most impact on the quality of sleep and the daily comfort of the bedroom.
